Your generosity can strengthen Hinton and Summers County today and for generations to come. Whether you want to make a gift now, include the community in your future plans, or create a charitable fund that reflects what matters most to you, the Hinton Area Foundation can help make your giving simple, meaningful, and lasting.

You may support the Foundation’s work where the need is greatest or give to any existing HAF fund. There is no minimum contribution to an existing fund, and every gift becomes part of a larger story of local generosity.

Support what matters to you right here at home.

A gift to the Hinton Area Foundation supports the local causes and opportunities you care about – today and for generations to come. Give to the Foundation’s unrestricted work, which allows HAF to respond to changing community needs, or choose any existing HAF fund. Even when a fund bears a person’s or family’s name, it is open to contributions from others unless specifically noted.

There is no minimum gift to an existing fund. Every gift matters.

Make a secure one-time or recurring gift through HAF’s online giving portal. Browse the fund catalog, select the fund you wish to support, and complete your gift online.

Cash and checks are a simple way to support HAF or any existing fund. Make checks payable to Hinton Area Foundation and write the fund name on the memo line. If you do not name a fund, your gift will support the Foundation’s unrestricted work and its ability to respond where resources are needed most.

If you are age 70½ or older, you may be able to make a Qualified Charitable Distribution, or QCD, directly from your IRA to the Hinton Area Foundation. A QCD generally is not included in your taxable income and may count toward your required minimum distribution.

The gift must be transferred directly from your IRA administrator to HAF. You may direct your gift to an eligible existing HAF fund or support the Foundation’s unrestricted work. Please contact HAF before initiating the distribution so we can ensure your gift is directed according to your wishes.

Real estate – such as a home, land, farm, or commercial property – may be used to make a meaningful charitable gift. Because property gifts require review of value, title, environmental considerations, carrying costs, and marketability, HAF must evaluate and approve each proposed gift before it is accepted. Contact us early so HAF and your professional advisors can determine whether the gift is a good fit.

Life insurance can provide a flexible way to make a current or future charitable gift. You may be able to name HAF as a full or partial beneficiary of a policy. In some circumstances, an existing policy may also be transferred to HAF, subject to review and acceptance. Your insurance and tax advisors can help you understand the implications for your situation.

Give Tax Smart

The asset you give can matter as much as the amount. Depending on your circumstances, a Qualified Charitable Distribution from an IRA, a gift of appreciated securities, a grant from a donor-advised fund, or another noncash gift may help you meet your charitable goals while using available tax advantages.

West Virginia Neighborhood Investment Program tax credits may also be available for qualifying gifts during an active HAF allocation period. Contact HAF before making a gift if you are interested in NIP credits, because availability is limited and program requirements apply.
