Your love for this place can last forever

You have spent a lifetime caring for your family, your values, and the community you call home. A planned gift lets that care continue – often through a simple addition to your will or a beneficiary designation. You do not have to be wealthy, and you do not have to part with assets today.

Your legacy may address Summers County’s greatest needs or support a particular cause, organization, scholarship, or existing HAF fund. You may also discuss creating a named fund that reflects your intentions.

Ways to Leave a Legacy

A gift through your will or living trust is one of the simplest ways to create a lasting charitable legacy. You may leave a specific dollar amount, a percentage of your estate, particular property, or all or part of what remains after loved ones are provided for. You may direct the gift where the need is greatest or designate an existing fund or charitable purpose.*

A charitable remainder trust may allow you to transfer assets to a trust, receive income for yourself or other beneficiaries for a stated period, and direct the remaining assets to HAF for the charitable purpose you choose. These arrangements require careful legal and financial planning. HAF can join the conversation with you and your advisors to help ensure your charitable intentions can be fulfilled.

Naming HAF as a full or partial beneficiary of a life insurance policy can be a simple way to make a future gift. You may also be able to transfer ownership of a policy to HAF, subject to review and acceptance. Contact your insurance, legal, and tax advisors before changing a policy or beneficiary designation.

*Ask your attorney whether language like this is right for you:

“I give to the Hinton Area Foundation, a nonprofit organization located in Hinton, West Virginia, [the sum of $___ / ___% of my estate / the remainder of my estate], to be used [where the need is greatest / for the following fund or charitable purpose: ___].”

Four Simple Steps

  1. Choose what matters. Decide whether your gift should address Summers County’s greatest needs or support a particular cause, organization, scholarship, or fund.
  2. Choose a giving method. Include HAF in your will or trust, name HAF as a beneficiary, or talk with us about property and other assets.
  3. Choose the amount. Leave a dollar amount, a percentage, particular property, or all or part of the remainder of your estate.
  4. Tell the right people. Work with your attorney or financial advisor, and consider letting HAF know so we can understand and honor your wishes.

Heritage Society

Donors who notify HAF that they have included the Foundation in their estate or other long-term plans may be recognized through the HAF Heritage Society. Recognition may inspire others, but you may also choose to remain anonymous. Sharing your plans with HAF is optional and does not create a binding commitment or change your estate documents.
