Col. James McCreery Baylor of Richmond, VA died August 21, 2004. He was a retired senior vice president of A.T. Massey Coal Company, Inc., and a retired US Marine Corps Colonel. He also served for over 40 years on the Boards of Directors of Piney Land Company, McCreery Coal Land Company, and Jame T. McCreery Company. A native of Hinton, he attended Ascension Episcopal Church. He held a Bachelors degree in commerce from the University of Virginia. Later, he earned a Masters degree in Commerce at the University of Virginia. He was also a graduate of Command and Staff College at Quantico, VA. He served in WWII in the Pacific and then later in the Korean war. Although he left Hinton at a young age, he retained a strong interest in the area. His family and the directors of the Piney Land Company, McCreery Coal Land Company and James T. McCreery Company have established a fund in the Hinton Area Foundation to honor his memory and his ties to Hinton. The income from the fund is to be awarded annually in his name at the discretion of the Board of the Hinton Area Foundation. Present value: $5000
